The estate sits at the edge of the village of Jumigny, approximately 90 minutes from Paris, 30 minutes from Reims and 45 minutes from Épernay, surrounded by the rolling agricultural hills that define this quietly extraordinary region. At its heart stands a 19th-century manor built above barrel-vaulted limestone cellars that predate it by centuries, alongside a historic pigeonnier whose presence marks the site's origins as an estate of feudal standing. Into this landscape, two ÖÖD with mirror saunas and mirrored-glass cabins have been placed within a living wildflower meadow, their facades reflecting the surrounding grass, stone, and light rather than announcing themselves. Guests do not sleep beside a garden. They sleep within it.

Each cabin is fully self-contained, with a private outdoor sauna, a dedicated terrace, and interiors that draw on an unexpected thread of South African craft: custom hardwood furniture, handwoven textiles, and linen made by some of the country's finest makers. The meadow planting surrounding the cabins was designed by Patrick and Sylvie Quibel of Les Jardins Plume, the Normandy garden atelier whose seasonal, structural approach to landscape has drawn international recognition.

To anchor each stay in its surroundings, a bottle of Champagne from the region awaits guests on arrival. It is an invitation to begin the experience with a true taste of place.

The retreat was conceived by Godfrey Hill, who discovered the Jumigny estate while driving through France on a road trip to Italy. Hill is South African-born, spent twelve years in the Netherlands, where he studied interior design and ran a design-led bed and breakfast in Amsterdam, and has long been drawn to the quiet sophistication of the Champagne region. The design choices at Sûr Jumigny are not incidental. Hill's ancestors were among the Huguenots who left France in the 1600s to settle in South Africa. The furniture, textiles, and sensibility he has brought back to this corner of the French countryside carry the long imprint of that journey.

My ancestors left France in the 1600s and carried European traditions to South Africa. Centuries later, I found myself standing in a French cellar that felt like something I had been searching for without knowing it. Sûr Jumigny is a conversation between those histories. The mirrors reflect what is already here. So does everything inside.
